Long-Range Touch Interactive Immersive Environment

This project turned a 12m by 6m space into a fully interactive environment powered by long-range touch sensors, reactive content and seamless motion tracking. The point of the build was precision: the content responds to every movement across a very large surface, so visitors do not have to touch a specific target to be noticed. It is the kind of work that defines our [interactive experiences](/event-technology/interactive-experiences/) capability — a room that behaves like a single, responsive object rather than a collection of screens.

The Challenge & Objective

Most interactive walls are built for a person standing close enough to touch a defined target. Scaling that idea to 12m by 6m changes the engineering completely, and the problems only appear once the surface is large and the audience is moving.

  • Sense across a large surface. Detecting a deliberate touch over 72 square metres without false triggers from ambient movement is the central technical problem.
  • Respond instantly at any position. Visitors will approach from anywhere, so the experience cannot assume a hotspot or a specific standing position.
  • Make it forgiving. A guest should not have to press precisely. The interaction has to tolerate imprecision or people will disengage within seconds.
  • Handle a crowd. A large interactive surface attracts a group, which means the system has to behave sensibly when several people are interacting at once.
  • Run reliably for the duration of a programme. There is no technician standing next to a twelve-metre wall adjusting it between guests.

Our Solution

We designed the system in layers — sensing, tracking, and content — so each could be tuned independently and the whole could be calibrated as one experience.

Long-range touch sensing across the full surface

Instead of relying on physical contact, the installation used long-range sensing so the surface can detect intent from a distance. That is what allowed a 12m x 6m area to behave like a responsive canvas: a visitor walking past can affect the content without having to find and hit a target, which removes the awkwardness of demanding precision from a public audience.

Motion tracking for continuous responsiveness

Motion tracking was layered in alongside touch sensing so the environment could respond to movement as well as deliberate interaction. The combination is what makes the space feel alive between deliberate actions — content shifts, reacts and evolves as people move through it, rather than only responding when someone commits to a touch.

Reactive content authored for the whole space

Content was produced for the full 12m x 6m field rather than tiled from a small screen design. Composition, scale and pacing were developed against the actual dimensions, so a reaction anywhere on the surface reads as part of one designed environment. This content work is carried by our [immersive content](/services/immersive-content-creation/) team and is inseparable from the sensing quality.

Calibrated as one system

Sensing range, tracking accuracy and content response were tuned together on site, because they determine each other. Getting that calibration right is what turns a technically capable installation into one that feels effortless, and it is the reason we do not treat hardware and content as separate deliverables.

Technology & Implementation

A custom sensing and tracking stack driving a large-format reactive content system, engineered for continuous public use.

Long-range sensor deployment and coverage

Sensors were positioned and calibrated to give consistent coverage across the entire 12m x 6m field, with overlap managed to avoid dead zones. Coverage planning mattered more than raw sensor count here, because an unevenly responsive surface is immediately obvious to visitors.

Motion tracking and multi-user behaviour

Tracking was tuned for a moving, multi-person audience, with the system resolving several simultaneous interactions without becoming chaotic. That behaviour is a design decision as much as a technical one — the content logic defines how concurrent actions are prioritised, so the room always looks composed.

Reactive content and real-time response

The content system was built to respond in real time, with response behaviour tuned to feel immediate but not twitchy. Rapid, noisy reactions make a large installation feel cheap, so pacing and thresholds were adjusted during on-site testing until the environment felt responsive and controlled.

Custom engineering, installation and operation in Dubai

The full stack was engineered in-house, installed and calibrated on site in Dubai, and supported by our technicians through the live period. Because the installation is custom, the same platform can be re-configured for a different space or a different content brief later.

Results & Impact

A large surface that responds naturally turns a display into an environment, and that is what this build delivered.

  • Visitors could engage from anywhere in a 12m x 6m space without needing to find a specific target or a host to explain it.
  • Reactive, motion-aware content made the room feel alive between deliberate interactions, which is what kept groups engaged.
  • Sensing and content were calibrated as one system, so the experience felt effortless rather than technical.
  • The platform is custom and reconfigurable, so it can be redeployed for different spaces and briefs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this Confidential Client project and how Ultratec4D delivers similar event technology.

What is a long-range touch interactive wall?

It is a large display surface that detects a visitor's intent from a distance rather than requiring physical contact with a target. On this project it covered a 12m x 6m area, so people could affect the content from anywhere in the space — which is what makes a large interactive surface feel responsive rather than demanding.

How do you make a large interactive surface handle a crowd?

Two things: coverage has to be even so there are no dead zones, and the content logic has to decide how concurrent interactions are prioritised so the room always looks composed. We tuned sensing range, tracking accuracy and response thresholds together on site, because the hardware and the content determine each other — tuning them separately is why large interactive installations often feel unreliable.

Can this kind of environment be moved to a different space?

Yes. Because the system is custom-built rather than a fixed product, it can be reconfigured for a different venue, surface size or content brief, with recalibration carried out on site. We regularly redeploy interactive platforms between events in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Do you build large-scale interactive installations in Dubai?

Yes. Long-range sensing, motion tracking, custom engineering and reactive content are all part of our interactive experiences service, delivered across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Riyadh and Jeddah including on-site calibration and technical operation.

Want a space that responds to your guests?

Send us the dimensions, the venue and what you want visitors to feel. We will propose the sensing approach, the content behaviour and the engineering needed to make it work reliably.
