Falling Star LED Tubes – Dubai Municipality at WETEX 2024

The Falling Star LED installation for Dubai Municipality at WETEX 2024 used programmable LED tubes to turn a piece of civic messaging into something visitors could watch. Rather than using light purely as decoration, the tubes were programmed with different lighting scenarios, including a cascading falling-star effect used to represent rainfall and a separate treatment for the sustainability message. It gave a government stand at a water-focused exhibition a visual language that was legible in seconds and relevant to the subject matter.

The Challenge & Objective

WETEX is a specialist water and environment exhibition, so the stand had to speak about a serious subject without becoming a lecture. The challenge was to make an abstract idea — water sustainability — into something a visitor would actually stop to watch, using light as the medium.

  • Make the message visual, not verbal. The sustainability story needed to be communicated to a walking exhibition audience who would not stop for a presentation.
  • Use a metaphor that works instantly. Rainfall had to be legible in a couple of seconds, without an explanation from a host.
  • Programmability across multiple scenarios. The same hardware had to support different messages so the stand could adapt through the day and across different visitors.
  • Fit the stand architecture. The lighting had to belong to the booth rather than stand in front of it, and work with the stand's graphics and messaging.
  • Run reliably for a full show. A long exhibition with daily build and strike cycles means the installation has to be robust and simple to reset.

Our Solution

We used programmable LED tubes as a storytelling device — a technical effect chosen because it carries a meaning the subject matter needs.

Programmable falling-star LED tubes

The installation was built from programmable LED tubes configured to produce a cascading, falling-star effect. Because the tubes are individually addressable, the cascade can be shaped, paced and directed rather than simply switched on — which is what makes it read as rain rather than as generic decorative lighting.

Scenarios mapped to the message

The tubes were programmed with different lighting scenarios, including the falling-rainfall sequence used to indicate water and the sustainability narrative the stand needed to carry. Mapping scenarios to specific parts of the message meant the hardware could express several ideas without being rebuilt, and the show team could select the right scenario for the audience in front of them.

Integrated with the stand design

The tube arrays were positioned as part of the stand composition, working with the booth graphics and physical build rather than sitting in front of them. Visitors encounter the effect as they approach, so the sustainability message is delivered during the approach instead of after they stop.

Content authored for the medium

The scenarios were designed specifically for programmable tubes — pace, density and fall length were tuned for the fixture type and the viewing distance on the show floor. That is the same content discipline we apply across our [immersive content](/services/immersive-content-creation/) work, and it is why the effect looks designed rather than programmed.

Technology & Implementation

A programmable lighting build with pre-authored scenarios, designed for continuous exhibition operation.

LED tube array and control hardware

The tubes were mounted in arrays with individual addressing, driven from a dedicated lighting control system. Mounting and fixings were designed to integrate with the stand build so the installation could be installed and removed with the booth structure rather than separately.

Programming and scenario control

Scenarios were programmed in advance and stored as selectable states, so the show team could switch between the rainfall and sustainability treatments on demand. Pre-compiling the sequences keeps the daily operation simple and removes the need for a programmer on the stand floor.

Show-floor viewing optimisation

Brightness, cascade speed and density were calibrated against the hall's ambient light and the distance from which visitors approach. Brightness in particular matters in a lit exhibition hall — a scenario that looks dramatic in a dark room can disappear under show lighting, so it is tuned on site rather than in the studio.

Installation and operation at DWTC, Dubai

On site in Dubai we installed, aligned and calibrated the arrays, then ran each scenario with the stand team before the exhibition opened. Our exhibition technicians supported the first show day and provided the reset procedure for the daily cycle.

Results & Impact

The installation turned a sustainability message into something an exhibition visitor could see rather than read.

  • The rainfall effect communicated its meaning almost immediately, which is a hard result to achieve with an abstract civic topic.
  • Multiple scenarios let the stand present different aspects of its message through the day without additional hardware.
  • The lighting was integrated into the booth design, so it strengthened the stand's identity instead of competing with the graphics.
  • The falling-star tube format is now a proven element in our exhibition toolkit for water, environment and sustainability themes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this Dubai Municipality project and how Ultratec4D delivers similar event technology.

What are falling star LED tubes?

They are programmable LED tubes arranged and individually addressed to produce a cascading, star-like fall effect. On the Dubai Municipality stand at WETEX 2024 they were used to represent rainfall, which is why the effect reads as water rather than as decorative lighting. The tubes can be programmed into different scenarios, so the same hardware can carry multiple messages.

How do you make LED lighting effects visible in a bright exhibition hall?

Brightness, cascade speed and density all need calibrating on site against the hall's ambient light and the visitor's viewing distance. A scenario that is dramatic in a dark room can disappear under show lighting, so we tune the effect at the venue rather than in the studio. This is standard practice for our [exhibition lighting](/services/audio-visual-lighting/) builds in Dubai and the UAE.

Can one LED installation show different messages at different times?

Yes. Because the fixtures are individually addressable, sequences are programmed in advance as separate scenarios that can be selected on demand. That means one installation can present different aspects of a message through the day — the rainfall and sustainability treatments on the WETEX 2024 stand were handled the same way.

Do you build custom LED installations for government and civic events?

Yes. Government, utilities and civic events are a regular part of our exhibition work in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and we handle design, engineering, programming, content and on-site operation. Share your message and venue and we will propose a visual treatment that communicates it quickly.

Need a message your audience will actually notice?

Tell us the idea you need to communicate and the venue it has to work in. We will propose a lighting concept, the programming approach and a build plan for Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh or anywhere in the GCC.
