Transparent Holographic Display – Medlab

The Transparent Holographic Display was built for a Medlab showcase in Dubai, where the requirement was a screen that could produce the illusion of content floating in mid-air without the bulk of a conventional LED wall. We used high-resolution P3.9 transparent display film, which produces holographic-like, futuristic visuals while remaining almost invisible when switched off. The result reads as imagery suspended in the room — usable as a hero visual, a product reveal surface or a virtual stage backdrop, depending on the content.

The Challenge & Objective

A healthcare technology showcase has to feel advanced without feeling like a science-fiction set, and the physical constraints of a stand make a conventional display a poor fit. The specific problems were about light, weight and believability:

  • Create a floating illusion. The content had to appear to hang in the air, which means a conventional opaque LED wall was the wrong solution — it would read as a screen, not as an effect.
  • Stay invisible when inactive. Any structure, frame or cabling visible in the room would break the illusion and make the venue look temporary.
  • Keep the visual language credible. Medtech audiences are technically literate, so the effect had to look genuinely high-end rather than like a novelty projection.
  • Work as more than one thing. The same surface had to be able to carry hero product visuals, atmospheric backdrops and stage-like content depending on the moment, without rebuilding the install.
  • Integrate into a stand structure. A transparent, flexible surface has to be tensioned and supported properly, and that mounting is a different engineering problem from a rigid panel wall.

Our Solution

We chose the medium based on the illusion rather than the specification, and then engineered the mounting to protect it.

High-resolution P3.9 transparent display film

The core decision was a P3.9 transparent LED film rather than a solid panel. A fine pitch matters here because the closer a transparent display sits to a conventional screen, the more the pixel structure gives it away — P3.9 keeps the grid tight enough that the surface reads as imagery even at close range, which is what makes the floating effect hold up. The film is also light and flexible enough to be tensioned into custom shapes rather than constrained by panel dimensions.

Content designed for the see-through effect

Because the surface is transparent, the content has to be authored differently. Open, light-on-transparent compositions read as objects floating in the room, whereas dense opaque imagery just looks like a dim screen. Our [immersive content](/services/immersive-content-creation/) team produced visuals specifically for this behaviour, which is what separates a genuine holographic impression from a washed-out panel.

Blending into the venue when switched off

A transparent display that disappears when off is arguably its most useful property, so the installation was designed around that. Mounting hardware, cabling and support structures were kept as visually quiet as possible, so during non-content moments the surface returns the room to itself and the venue retains a clean, premium finish.

Flexible for multiple applications

Because the surface is light, flexible and quick to re-content, the same installation can be used as a mid-air hero visual, a virtual stage backdrop or a branded product reveal. That adaptability is why the format works well for medtech showcases, where the same space has to serve a keynote, a product moment and a networking session.

Technology & Implementation

The build combined transparent display hardware, custom tensioning and content authored for transparency.

Transparent LED film and control

The film was driven by a control system matched to its native resolution, with brightness calibrated for the venue's ambient light. Transparent displays lose output compared to solid panels, so correct calibration is what makes the content read clearly on a lit show floor rather than appearing faint and grey.

Custom mounting and tensioning

Unlike a rigid panel wall, transparent film has to be held under even tension or the image distorts. We designed a custom support and tensioning structure sized to the display area, integrated into the stand so the screen is properly supported without a visible heavy frame. This is the part of the build that most affects whether the effect looks premium.

Holographic-style visual production

Content was produced specifically for the transparent surface — layered, light-on-clear compositions with depth and float designed into them. The same creative approach supports the [holographic and 3D projection](/3d-holographic-projection-services-dubai/) work we deliver in Dubai and the wider UAE, adapted to this specific medium.

Installation and calibration in Dubai

On site in Dubai the film was tensioned, aligned and colour-calibrated, then tested against the venue's lighting conditions at different times of day. Because transparency makes calibration more sensitive, this final step was completed with the client's brand team present.

Results & Impact

The display achieved the effect it was specified for: content that appears to float, in a structure that disappears when it is not needed.

  • Visitors read the visuals as suspended in the room rather than as a screen, which is the objective a transparent display has to hit.
  • The installation returned the venue to a clean state between content moments, keeping the stand looking finished at all times.
  • One surface served multiple purposes — hero visual, product reveal and virtual stage backdrop — without remounting hardware.
  • The format suits medtech and product showcases where the space has to look credible, advanced and uncluttered at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about this Medlab project and how Ultratec4D delivers similar event technology.

What is a transparent holographic display?

It is a see-through display surface — typically high-resolution transparent LED film — used to show content that appears to float in mid-air. On the Medlab project in Dubai we used P3.9 transparent film, which keeps the pixel grid tight enough that imagery reads clearly while the surface itself stays visually transparent and almost invisible when switched off.

Why does pitch matter on a transparent display?

Because the surface is see-through, the pixel structure is more visible than on a solid panel — the closer it looks to a normal screen, the less convincing the floating effect becomes. A fine pitch such as P3.9 keeps the grid tight enough that the surface reads as imagery even at close range, which is what allows the holographic impression to hold up. Correct brightness calibration matters for the same reason.

Can a transparent display work as a stage backdrop?

Yes. Because the surface is light, flexible and quick to re-content, the same installation can serve as a mid-air hero visual, a product reveal or a virtual stage backdrop, changing purpose without remounting hardware. That flexibility makes it well suited to showrooms, exhibitions and medtech showcases in the UAE.

Do you supply and install transparent displays in Dubai?

Yes. We supply, mount, calibrate and operate transparent and holographic displays for exhibitions, launches and showrooms across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Saudi Arabia, including the custom tensioning structures required to make the effect look clean.

Want imagery that floats instead of sitting on a wall?

Tell us the space, the viewing angles and the message. We will propose the right transparent or holographic format, the mounting approach and the content direction for your venue.
