Robotic Gift Dispenser – ADNOC, Abu Dhabi (2023)
The ADNOC Robotic Gift Dispenser turned a gifting moment into a working robotics demonstration. Built for an activation in Abu Dhabi in 2023, the installation placed a six-axis robotic arm behind a presentation counter where it reached into a presentation tray, picked up a wrapped gift and presented it to the visitor in front of it. The point was not automation for its own sake — it was a way of showing what modern industrial robotics actually does, using something the audience cared about as the payload.
ADNOC - Abu DhabiRobotic Arm Robotic Arm Gift Dispenser which captivated visitors as it grabs and dispense the gifts, providing a memorable and engaging experience that highlighted the capabilities of modern robotics.

The Challenge & Objective
Putting a live industrial robot in front of guests is a genuinely difficult brief. A robot that stalls, drops a gift or swings towards someone ends the experience immediately, and in an energy-sector corporate setting the demonstration also has to look deliberate and premium rather than improvised.
- Reliability over spectacle. The arm had to run continuously through an activation day without dropping a gift, faulting or needing a reset in front of guests.
- Guest safety as a non-negotiable. A six-axis arm operating in a public space needed guarding, restricted reach and a defined operating envelope before anything else was designed.
- A gripper suited to the actual gift. Off-the-shelf grippers are designed for components, not for irregularly wrapped presentation boxes, so the end-effector had to be purpose designed.
- A natural handover. A robot that simply places a box on a counter reads as automation. The movement needed to be shaped so that presenting a gift felt like a deliberate, courteous action.
- Themed integration. The cell had to sit inside an ADNOC-branded environment and look intentional within the activation design, not like a demonstration unit that was dropped in.
Our Solution
We designed the cell from the payload outwards: decide what the robot has to hold, then engineer everything else around it.
A purpose-designed end-effector
The most important component was the gripper. Rather than adapting a component-handling tool, we designed an end-effector for presentation gift boxes — enough contact and support to pick them cleanly and reliably, with a movement profile that keeps the package stable and visible throughout the handover. This is the detail that separates a demonstration that works from one that works on a good day.
Programmed pick-and-place choreography
The pick, lift, transfer and present cycles were programmed as repeatable motions rather than taught free-form movements. A fixed, well-rehearsed cycle is easier to guarantee, easier to re-arm and easier for a guest to read — the arm always behaves the same way, which is what makes it feel intentional.
An experience designed around the guest
The robot was positioned so visitors approached from the front and received the gift at chest height, with the arm doing the presenting and the guest doing the taking. That handover distance is a small design decision with a large effect on how the interaction feels, and it is central to how we plan [robotic activations](/event-technology/robotics/).
A branded cell, not a demo unit
The working enclosure, counter and surrounds were designed to carry ADNOC branding so that the technology read as part of the activation. Visitors were looking at a brand experience that happened to involve a robot — not at a robot that happened to be at an event.
Technology & Implementation
The installation used industrial robotics hardware with event-grade integration, programming and safety engineering.
Six-axis industrial robotic arm
A six-axis arm gave the reach and wrist freedom needed to pick from a tray and present at a natural height without repositioning the base. That flexibility is what made a single arm work for a continuous visitor flow instead of requiring a reset between guests.
Custom gripper and payload engineering
The end-effector, its mounting and the presentation tray were developed as one system so the robot's cycle time, grip confidence and handover height were designed together. Payload, centre of gravity and approach angle were all resolved during testing rather than on the event floor.
Safety engineering and operating envelope
The cell was designed around a restricted operating envelope with physical guarding, a defined approach zone and an emergency stop within reach of the operator. Safety was engineered in from the concept stage, which is a requirement for any public-facing robotic activation we deliver.
Programming, testing and operator deployment in Abu Dhabi
The full cycle was programmed, bench-tested and rehearsed before the activation opened, and our engineer ran the cell during the live period with a defined re-arm procedure between guests. On-site operation was handled by our team, consistent with how we deploy robotics across the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Results & Impact
The activation succeeded on the two things that matter for a robotics demonstration: it ran all day, and it made people stop and watch.
- The arm ran a continuous visitor flow without dropping a gift or requiring a mid-session reset, which is the benchmark for a public robotics activation.
- Guests received the gift from the robot directly, which gave the handover a moment of theatre that a tray-based distribution could never have created.
- The demonstration communicated a genuine capability rather than a gimmick — the motion was legible and the payload was something the audience valued.
- The branded cell design meant the technology reinforced the activation identity instead of competing with it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about this ADNOC project and how Ultratec4D delivers similar event technology.
How does a robotic gift dispenser work at an event?
A six-axis robotic arm is programmed with a repeating pick-and-place cycle: it reaches into a presentation tray, grips a wrapped gift with a custom end-effector, transfers it to the guest at chest height and releases. Because the cycle is programmed rather than taught live, it behaves identically for every visitor, which is what keeps a public robotics activation running smoothly all day.
Why was a custom gripper needed for this project?
Industrial grippers are designed for components with consistent, predictable geometry. Presentation gift boxes do not work that way, so the end-effector had to be purpose designed to grip them securely, hold them at a presentable angle and release them cleanly. That payload engineering is what removes the risk of a dropped or tilted handover.
How do you keep a robotic arm safe around event guests?
Safety is designed in from the concept stage: a restricted operating envelope, physical guarding of the working area, a defined approach zone for visitors and an emergency stop within the operator's reach. We also position the handover point so guests take the gift rather than reach into the robot's working space.
Can we build a robotic activation for our event in Abu Dhabi or Dubai?
Yes. Robotic arms, custom end-effectors and full branded cells are core to our robotic activations service across the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Share your venue, the payload you want to handle and the visitor flow you expect, and we will propose a concept that is safe, repeatable and buildable.
Want robotics that does something real at your event?
Tell us the payload, the space and the guest flow. We will come back with a cell design, a safety plan and a demonstration format that holds up to a full activation day.
